Leigh Bowery! Tate Modern (closes on 31.08.25)

The Leigh Bowery! retrospective exhibition is now in it’s closing week, after a successful six month tenure at the Tate Modern in London. An immersive journey into the life and legacy of Australian-born performance artist, designer and club provocateur Leigh Bowery (1961 - 1994).

The below gallery shows several pages from the accompanying extensive exhibition book, featuring images from Dave Swindells’s archive (Time Out Club Editor from 1986 - 2009) along with Derek Ridgers club archive.

Both Dave and Derek photographed London’s diverse and rich club culture during the 1980’s, notably the infamous and decadent club hosted by Leigh Bowery ‘Taboo’ where defiant outrageousness challenged conservative norms and the crowd that frequented it became legendary. The door policy was simple ‘dress as though your life depends on it, or don’t bother’!

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an immersion into Leigh’s world, where he pushes the boundaries of performance, fashion and above all identity.
